Mexico vs. Ecuador
Mexico and Ecuador battle on Sunday, and it’s a super important match. Both sides still have an opportunity to punch their ticket to the Round of 16, but there is plenty of work to do.
El Tri suffered a stunning 1-0 loss to Venezuela last time out, and after upending Jamaica 1-0 in the opener, Mexico has an even goal differential. As such, El Tri must pick up a victory against Ecuador if it wishes to avoid elimination in the group stage.
Ecuador opened behind the 8-ball, as its captain received a red card at 22′ in the opener, eventually falling to Venezuela 2-1 after playing down a man for the majority of the match. Ecuador thumped Jamaica 3-1 last time out, receiving a little help along the way. Jamaica actually had an own goal at 13′ in that match, while Kendry Paez banged home a penalty kick before the break. Alan Minda added a goal in stoppage time in the second half for the convincing victory.
Mexico midfielder Edson Alvarez is not fit to play, as he battles a hamstring ailment. In addition, Santiago Gimenez and Alexis Vega must watch their steps, as they posted a yellow card last time out, so another in this match would disqualify them, should Mexico advance.
Enner Valencia is back for Ecuador after he was sent off in the first match with a dangerous challenge, securing a red card. That’s great news for La Tricolor. For Ecuador, Paez and Jeremy Sarmiento are on yellow cards, so they need to be careful to avoid a potential suspension should they advance.
We’re going to have a lot of urgency on both sides, as one of these clubs will be headed home, and one will be headed to the Round of 16. Ecuador looked awfully strong last time out, and they held their own for a while playing a majority of the game down in the opener, a match it very well could have won. Ecuador will be fine with a draw, and that’s the most attractive play for a chance to double up.
